A ring may catch your eye because of its colour, then win you over with a detail in the setting. When choosing a 925 sterling silver ring with a natural gemstone, consider the whole piece: stone, proportions, finish, ring size and the information provided. These pointers will help you compare designs, whether you are looking for a gift, an understated ring or something that stands out.
1. Start with a colour you enjoy
Do you prefer a rich green, a light blue or a violet shade? Compare photographs from the front and side, along with the video. Look at what appeals to you in the stone, but also how much space it occupies on the hand. Ask for an additional view if you find it difficult to judge the proportions.
The Duo Éclat ring, with tsavorite or sapphire depending on the variation, offers different colours within the same design, accompanied by two white zircons. A colour appearing in the model’s description does not guarantee availability: select the variation on its product page.
If you prefer sapphire, our natural sapphire guide explains colour, cut and transparency.
2. Compare the lines of the setting
Two rings with green stones can have very different characters. The Noble natural emerald ring features a rectangular emerald in a signet-style setting with a bezel. The Élégance Striée natural emerald ring combines a rectangular step-cut stone with grooved shoulders and white zircons.
For aquamarine, Élégance Tressée draws attention to its braided band, while Éclat Pavé has a setting decorated with white zircons and different gemstone choices depending on the variation.
Watch the wording: “emerald cut” describes a cutting style, not necessarily an emerald gemstone. Aquamarine can also have this cut. Look at the stone’s height and the band’s width too, particularly if you already wear other rings.
3. Distinguish the silver from its finish
925 sterling silver contains 92.5% silver. It is the setting’s metal; its surface finish may vary. Rhodium-plated silver has a rhodium coating, while gold-plated silver carries a layer of gold, which may be rose gold. A gold coating does not make the setting solid gold.
GIA explains sterling silver’s composition and the role of rhodium plating. Silver can tarnish and scratch; rhodium plating makes it less likely to tarnish. Check the finish specified for your chosen variation: it may differ between versions of the same design.
4. Check your ring size and the actual options
A beautiful ring needs to fit you too. Have your size confirmed and state which sizing system you use, particularly when ordering a European size. If you compare with a ring you already own, use one worn on the same finger and ask for advice if you are unsure.
On a product page with variations, select the stone, the ring size where offered and the certificate option. Then check the availability of that combination. If resizing appears as an option, confirm that it applies to the particular model, along with its cost and timing. For a gift, it is better to check these details before ordering.
5. Check what your choice includes
Compare the final price for your selected combination, including the options you want. A ring combines a gemstone and a setting, so its price cannot be compared directly with that of a loose stone.
If a certificate is offered, ask which document will be supplied, which laboratory issues it and which stone it covers. The word “certificate” does not automatically mean a GIA report. Check the information actually available instead of inferring treatment or origin from a photograph. For sapphires, our heated or unheated guide explains why “natural” and “unheated” mean different things.
6. Plan suitable care
Follow GIA’s jewellery care advice: remove your ring before swimming or using household cleaners, and store it separately to reduce scratching. Cleaning must suit the gemstones, any treatments and the setting. If unsure, ask for advice before using a cleaning product, an ultrasonic cleaner or steam. The description “natural gemstone” alone does not establish the right care routine.
