Padparadscha is one of the most distinctive and sought-after sapphire varieties. Its appeal lies in a delicate combination of pink and orange rather than the relatively single-colour appearance sought in many blue sapphires.<\/p>\n

That balance gives the stone its identity. A pink sapphire should not be reclassified as a padparadscha simply because a photograph appears warm-toned.<\/p>\n

A colour that is difficult to define<\/h2>\n

A slight orange tint in a pink sapphire does not automatically qualify it as padparadscha.<\/p>\n

Laboratories apply criteria involving hue, saturation, tone, colour distribution and relevant treatments. Their interpretation can differ, and the appearance may change with lighting.<\/p>\n

The name carries commercial significance, so it should be supported by the actual stone and suitable documentation.<\/p>\n

Why does the report matter?<\/h2>\n

For an important stone, it is preferable for the designation to be supported by a recognised laboratory rather than only by the seller's wording.<\/p>\n

A report may also address treatment and, where the service is included and a conclusion is possible, geographical origin.<\/p>\n

Read the complete report, including comments. A report for a natural pink sapphire is not the same as a report identifying a padparadscha.<\/p>\n

Clarity is only one factor<\/h2>\n

Like other sapphires, padparadscha can contain inclusions. Its value does not depend solely on clarity.<\/p>\n

Colour quality and distribution, treatment, weight and cut all matter. A stone that looks clear but lacks the desired balance of colour is not automatically a fine padparadscha.<\/p>\n

Heated or unheated padparadscha<\/h2>\n

Heat treatment can also occur in sapphires of this colour family. A fine unheated padparadscha can be particularly rare.<\/p>\n

The absence of heating alone does not make a stone exceptional. Its beauty, colour balance and the laboratory's actual conclusions remain central.<\/p>\n

Other treatments should not be confused with traditional heating. Ask the laboratory or seller to clarify any treatment wording relevant to the designation.<\/p>\n

Be careful with photographs<\/h2>\n

Pink-orange tones are sensitive to white balance, illumination and the screen used to view them. Examine several photographs and, if possible, a video in natural or neutral light.<\/p>\n

Do not decide the designation from an edited image or from the colour shown on one screen.<\/p>\n

Why are the criteria different from those for blue sapphire?<\/h2>\n

For a blue sapphire, a buyer may want a relatively pure blue without a distracting secondary hue. For padparadscha, the harmonious combination of pink and orange is the point.<\/p>\n

It should therefore be assessed according to its own colour criteria. The sapphire collection can be explored for other colours, but a pink stone should only be presented as padparadscha when appropriate documentation supports that description.<\/p>\n
