When buying a natural sapphire, one of the first questions concerns treatment. Two stones can both be natural, come from the same region and have an attractive colour, yet differ considerably in value according to whether they have been heated.<\/p>\n

A heated sapphire can still be natural<\/h2>\n

A heated natural sapphire formed in nature and was subsequently heat-treated to alter aspects of its appearance, particularly colour or transparency. Heating does not turn a natural sapphire into a laboratory-grown one.<\/p>\n

Traditional heating is a long-established practice in the sapphire trade. Depending on the material and process, it can change the colour, reduce some cloudy areas or improve the overall appearance.<\/p>\n

An unheated sapphire has not undergone this heat treatment. When it already has excellent colour and transparency naturally, it may be much rarer.<\/p>\n

Why are unheated sapphires often more expensive?<\/h2>\n

Fine colour, good transparency and attractive brilliance occurring together without heating are less common. At comparable quality, this rarity can bring a substantial premium.<\/p>\n

This does not make a heated sapphire a poor-quality stone. A heated sapphire can be beautiful, bright and well suited to jewellery. For many buyers it offers an appealing balance of beauty, size and budget.<\/p>\n

A fine heated sapphire can also be worth more than an unheated one with weak colour, poor transparency or an unattractive cut. Treatment is one part of the assessment.<\/p>\n

How can you tell whether a sapphire has been heated?<\/h2>\n

The unaided eye usually cannot establish this with certainty. Gemological examination and, for important stones, a report from a recognised laboratory help determine whether indications of heating were observed.<\/p>\n

Laboratories use specific wording. Read the exact conclusion rather than automatically describing the stone as \u201cuntreated\u201d. An absence of observed heating indications is a conclusion about heat treatment, not an unlimited guarantee about every possible intervention.<\/p>\n

Traditional heating and other treatments<\/h3>\n

Do not group all treatments together under a vague \u201cheated\u201d label. Lattice diffusion, including beryllium diffusion, and fracture filling are separate matters that require appropriate disclosure. Ask what was examined and what the report says about the particular stone.<\/p>\n

Which should you choose?<\/h2>\n

If rarity and collecting are important to you, a fine unheated sapphire may be particularly attractive.<\/p>\n

If your priority is an appealing colour and lively appearance within a more accessible budget, a heated sapphire may be an excellent choice.<\/p>\n

Choose according to the individual stone's quality, your preferences, your budget and the importance you place on treatment history. The key is clear, accurate disclosure supported by suitable documentation.<\/p>\n
